GA Upskilling| PPL Master Class (PICKSA Course)

What would you do if …
you suffered an alternator failure?
the arrival airfield suddenly closed?
you suffered radio failure?
you experienced a bird strike?
the weather began to close in?
your passenger felt suddenly unwell?

Our PPL Master Class or “PICKSA” course is designed for qualified pilots of all experience levels engaged in general aviation and recreational flying, who wish to refresh, enhance and refine their role as pilot in command.

This course is based around a set of practical scenarios, which will see groups of students refresh practical PPL theory, alongside practical flight management with an emphasis on pilot decision-making, workload management and communication.

While working in the teams, students will make practical decisions throughout scenarios which promote active threat and error management, and enhance flight safety.

How the course works

Depending on which course option you choose, this course will either be held In-Person in one of our classrooms, or online over Microsoft Teams. Either way, the workflow will work the same way.

  1. You will be paired in groups of 3 or 4 (Maximum 12 people on a course), and presented with a few practical flying scenarios.
  2. Throughout the flight scenarios you will need to communicate, option generate and make effective and safe decisions with your team, learning new tools to help you do this more effectively.
  3. The course will highlight modern techniques and tools to help you develop your knowledge and pilot soft skills.
  4. Students will get a chance to share experiences, ideas and have a chinwag, while working to enhance effective workload management and crew resource management to promote effective threat and error management.
  5. Throughout the weekend course, students will refresh knowledge of core LAPL/ PPL theory concepts and how these play a role in a practical flying environment.

  • Electrical faults
  • Radio Faults
  • Navigation Equipment failure

And many more…. but come along to find out

What is a PICKSA Course?

PICKSA (Pilot in Command – Knowledge Skills and Attitudes), is an abbreviation we use here at SkyLearner to highlight the importance of integrating theory knowledge, to promote understanding, and when integrated with pilot soft skills, can help produce pilots who are more aware, and able to produce effective and timely solutions when faced with a problem.

Will I refresh my theory knowledge during this course?

Some of it, Yes. This course focuses on the theory related to planning and operating a practical everyday general aviation flight, providing a chance to refresh existing knowledge and learn new skills.

I already have my license why should I keep learning?

Aviation is a dynamic and safety focused industry, which has managed to achieve inccredible operational and safety standards, in the wake of a changing environment. This in no part is thanks to the professionalism of the people of those involved.

It is important that pilots remain proficient with up to date regulation, modern techniques, and understanding, in order to be an effective commander and operate safely.

Can I get a certificate ?

Yes we will give you a certificate and sign your logbook.
