ATPL theory is often seen as the hardest part of pilot training. The way most providers run it, it’s also the loneliest. You pay a fee, receive your logins, and study alone. Questions go to an inbox, and replies arrive when they arrive.

Subject order, exam grouping, and booking strategy matter. Most students first encounter these rules when they break one. Expect at least 9 months; some of the students we meet can take around 14 months to pass.

Our welcome emails walk you through CAA exam registration, which takes up to 10 days, so we get it moving early. The CAA travels at its own airspeed.

Build your timetable
A short onboarding call turns your availability into a week-by-week plan that includes exam dates at your chosen venue.

Attend the intro day
A group session on MS Teams covering course structure, question technique, basic maths, core physics, and the CAA-required KSA100 checks. Bring your questions.

Work through the material
Videos, animations, interactive workthroughs, and text, written by the instructors who take your calls.

Test as you go
End-of-module and cumulative progress tests (80% pass mark), with CAA-style questions and video walkthroughs.

Attend your knowledge check, then sit your exam
Book each check from the monthly calendar. Attend, ask your final questions, and we issue your CAA exam recommendation. Then book your exam.

Repeat until 13 of 13
Fail an exam, and an instructor debriefs you first. Attend the in-person KSA day at Carrickfergus before your final exam.

Josh Van-Rietvelde
Head of Training, CTKI & Safety
Josh has spent much of his career around training, both in the UK and overseas, with experience across general aviation, charter operations and airlines. He has taught PPL, CPL/IR and ATPL theoretical knowledge for many years, alongside CRM and simulator instruction. His flying background includes both turboprop and jet aircraft, and he also has experience with airline recruitment and pilot selection. Josh is easy going by nature and likes to keep complicated subjects as simple and practical as possible, helping students understand the reasoning behind what they are learning rather than simply memorising it.

QUESTIONS STUDENTS
ASK US
Why take ATPL theory instead of CPL theory?
ATPL theory is required for multi-crew airline flying, and ATPL exam passes are also accepted for CPL and IR issue. Most airline-bound modular pilots sit ATPL exams for this reason.
Can I study ATPL theory while working full time?
Yes. Choose one of three paces at sign-up, down to 15 hours a week, and receive a timetable built around those hours, with at least one study-free day every week.
What happens if I fail an ATPL exam?
An instructor debriefs you on where you struggled, then you rebook a sitting that suits you. The CAA allows 4 attempts per exam, and our grouping plan banks 2 sittings in reserve.
What is a frozen ATPL?
A frozen ATPL is a CPL with an instrument rating plus all 13 ATPL theory passes. It becomes a full ATPL once you log the required experience, including 1,500 flight hours.
How much does the ATPL theory course cost?
The SkyLearner ATPL theory course costs £2,460, paid in full, in 6 instalments of £410, or 12 of £205. The price includes all 13 pre-exam knowledge checks and the KSA day.
