Let’s make sense of your starting point

Your UK conversion.
A clearer theory route.

Your licence and training history shape what comes next. A few short answers will point you towards a useful starting place.

Your route, step by stepStep 1 · Your licence

Choose the option that best fits. We’ll only show the relevant questions, and you can change an answer at any point. No documents needed here.

Which aeroplane licence do you hold?

A “frozen ATPL” normally means you hold a CPL with ATPL theory passes. If that describes you, choose CPL.

A starting point, confirmed through review. Read the CAA’s CPL and ATPL conversion routes 1–6. The CAA makes the licensing decision; this page covers the theory side of aeroplane conversions.

Where a full approved course is needed

A complete
CPL or ATPL course.

This is for CPL holders who need a full UK theory course, including non-EASA ICAO CPL holders without ATPL theory credit who want UK ATPL exams.

A guided path through the required syllabus, with learning, practice and course assessments brought together.

  • A study plan and help getting started
  • CAA-style questions linked to the learning
  • Instructor support and progress checks
Where previous training can count

Build on what
you’ve already learned.

This is for EASA CPL holders without a previous UK CPL whose relevant approved ground school was completed within three years before enrolment, subject to review.

Qualifying EASA CPL training can lead to a programme centred on retained knowledge and the work you actually need.

  • Review of your training record
  • Assessments and instructor knowledge checks
  • Refresher learning where needed
Where the route gives training credit

Focused ATPL
exam preparation.

This is for eligible full ATPL holders whose CAA route gives training credit or does not require ground school, and who want support with UK exam preparation.

Focus your time on the UK exams you need, with revision support that builds on your existing ATPL experience.

  • Relevant theory material and question practice
  • UK Operational Procedures preparation
  • Help focusing your revision

We’ll ask for your licence and relevant training, exam and flight-time records at enrolment. We’ll explain what to send and help you get the paperwork right.

Good questions. Straight answers.

A few things
worth clearing up.

Can you help me convert an FAA, South African or EASA CPL or ATPL to the UK?

We can help with the theoretical knowledge side of an eligible UK CPL(A) or ATPL(A) conversion. Your licence, experience, ratings and training history determine the route. The CAA decides licence issue; medical, verification, flight training and testing arrangements are separate.

Does a “frozen ATPL” count as holding a full ATPL?

No. If your licence is a CPL with ATPL theoretical knowledge passes, choose CPL in the route finder. Those passes are important evidence, but they do not by themselves make you a full ATPL holder or establish eligibility for the ICAO ATPL full-training-credit route.

Does training credit mean I can skip UK CAA exams?

Not automatically. Training credit relates to the instruction you need; examination credit relates to the exams you need. We’ll keep the two separate and review any examination credit under the relevant CAA route before recommending study.

What is SkyLearner’s reduced-training approach for recent EASA CPL ground school?

Where the relevant EASA-approved ground school was completed within three years before enrolment, our normal policy is to credit the previously completed content, subject to evidence and review. You still complete EOMTs (module checks), CMPTs (selected learning from all modules covered so far), EOSTs (subject mock exams) and a subject instructor knowledge check. Current Operational Procedures content and its assessments remain required under our policy. Identified gaps may need further study. These are SkyLearner requirements; they do not create CAA exam credit.

What if my EASA ground school was more than three years ago?

We arrange an individual knowledge review rather than promising automatic content credit. Your Head of Training-approved programme may include knowledge checks, refresher work, selected subjects or a fuller course. This three-year policy applies to the EASA CPL training-credit pathway; it does not impose mandatory ground school on an EASA ATPL route that does not require it.

Do eligible full ATPL holders have to buy an approved ground school course?

Where the applicable CAA route gives full training credit, or states that ground training is not required, we do not impose a full approved theory course solely for conversion. We can provide optional revision, question practice, relevant material and knowledge checks for the UK exams you need. The ICAO ATPL route depends on the required experience and valid multi-pilot type rating; EASA ATPL routes have their own rules.

Can I study before moving to the UK?

Yes. Our theory learning and revision support are online, so you can study from abroad. Confirm UK exam eligibility, venues, medical, practical and licensing arrangements before booking travel. We’ll help you understand the theory steps and where the CAA’s detailed guidance fits.
