What should I look for when choosing an ATPL theory course?

You need to look for a course that's going to work for you. That sounds obvious, but there's no point choosing an intensive course if you don't have intensive time. You're better choosing something flexible. On the other hand, if you want to take six months or a year off work and focus on this, something more intensive may suit you. The important thing is: does the course suit you?

Not all training styles suit everyone. We've had people come to us from other flight schools and say that it just didn't click. It happens. Everyone has a preference or a way of learning. It's up to the training provider to show some adaptability.

You're looking for a school that clicks with you. That isn't always the best-known one. Look for people who talk with you, who you feel comfortable with, and who you believe will talk things through if you have a problem. They should treat the student as a customer.

Ultimately, you're looking for someone who will guide you through the whole process and get you to the end. You're not just looking to be given some material and tools and told, “Let me know when you're ready.”

That's why we guide people through our ATPL course with study plans, to help make sure they're on course. It's why we reach out with welfare checks through SkyLearner Cares. We recognise that it's more than theory content. Sometimes it's career guidance, or simply, “What do I do?” You don't want to feel lost.

When choosing a theory provider, look for someone who gels with you. At the end of the day, approved providers have been through an approval process. There's a CAA approval process for ATPL theory courses, including ours.
