How the course works

General Description

The ICAO to UK PPL (A) online self study theory course is designed to allow you to study at home on your own time schedule, using the SkyLearner interactive learning material, question bank, practice exams, and instructor support.

At any point you get stuck, you can simply reach out to us using our live chat or send us an email.

Learning Path

  1. Complete the subject learning material, tests and practice exams online.
  2. Successfully complete a knowledge check with a SkyLearner instructor online (1 hr pre-exam brushup, over Microsoft Teams.
  3. Practice questions and exams in our solutionbank (Question Bank)
  4. Sit your 2 x official CAA exams (Human Performance & Airlaw), one at a time or together at one of our training venues, or at your local flight training school.
  5. Repeat until you complete both Human Performance and Airlaw theory exams.
  6. Once complete, we will verify that you meet the requirements for conversion as laid out in UK Aircrew Regulations Part FCL, and issue you with a course completion certificate with a recommendation for skills test. We can recommend a flight examiner, or you can arrange to use a local flight examiner to undertake your skills test.

Remember, we are available to answer any of your questions relating to your license conversion.

The SkyLearner ICAO to UK PPL (A) ground school option is designed for those wanting to go through the core areas of Human Performance and Airlaw, like a traditional classroom.

Using our classroom studio, or Microsoft Teams (Depending on class sizes), you can come and join us in-person at one of our training venues or join the live session online.

You will also get 6 months access to the SkyLearner system, including interactive learning material, question bank, practice exams and so much more...

Learning Path

  1. Choose a course start date. The dates shown are for the HPL and Airlaw sections of the PPL Ground school.
  2. Start pre-reading your learning material
  3. Attend the PPL ground school (Online or In-Person) for both UK PPL Conversion Subjects as per the course timetable. This gives you the chance to learn the core concepts, ask any questions on the spot and join the dots...
  4. Practice questions in our solution bank (question bank) until you feel ready to sit the exams.
  5. Sit the CAA exam for each subject, one at a time, at one of our training venues, or at your local flying school. 
  6. Once complete, we will verify that you meet the requirements for conversion as laid out in UK Aircrew Regulations Part FCL, and issue you with a course completion certificate with a recommendation for skills test. We can recommend a flight examiner, or you can arrange to use a local flight examiner to undertake your skills test.

Along the way, you can always reach out and get the help you need to support you passing the exams, and understanding the subjects.

We publish PPL ground school dates for the next 12 months, but spaces are limited to a maximum of 12 people to ensure learning is not maximum.  The ICAO to UK PPL course, piggybacks off the main PPL ground school course and the dates shown are for the relevant airlaw and human performance subjects, required for licence conversion.

ICAO to UK PPL(A) Conversion Syllabus and Subjects​

This course is approved by the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority and contains the following Subjects in accordance with the theoretical knowledge requirements for the conversion of an ICAO PPL to a UK Private Pilot’s Licence (Aeroplanes) in compliance with UK Part FCL 215.

Human Performance & Limitations ​

ICAO to UK PPL Conversion Requirements

In order to simply convert your ICAO PPL to a UK PPL, at the time of flight test, you must:

  • Hold a valid ICAO ATPL, CPL or PPL and the rating you wish to transfer must be valid (eg. SEP)
  • Hold a valid UK Part MED class 1, or 2 medical certificate
  • Have completed a minimum of 100 total flying hours on aircraft within the same category, e.g SEP.
  • Pass PPL Human Performance & Airlaw subject CAA exams
  • Pass a skills test with flight examiner.
If you do not meet these requirements, you are not eligible for conversion of your ICAO PPL to a UK PPL, and should contact us or the UK CAA for further guidance as additional training may be required.

This one really depends on you, whether you choose our distance learning course, virtual groundschool or In person groundschool, we will always aim to support your goals, however typical time frames are:

  • Online Self Study Course:  2 Months part-time
  • Ground school (Online or in-person): 1 Month preread +2 weeks of virtual or in-person ground school

We recommend you sit the subjects in the following order, as this helps build up theory concepts, and makes the learning path more logical.

The order we recommend is:

  1. Human Performance
  2. Airlaw

A Private Pilot License (Aeroplane), is a license designed to allow you to take your friends and family flying. Although the PPL license is designed for hobby flying, it is often used as a stepping stone towards a commercial pilot license.

In order to gain a PPL you need to:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 hours total flying time
  • Successfully pass the 9 x PPL theory examinations
  • Pass a practical skills test with a flight examiner

There are 9 PPL exams, one in each of the 9 subjects. The LAPL uses the same exams as PPL. To convert your ICAO/ FAA/ CASA/ EASA PPL to to UK PPL(A) you are only required to pass the 2 subjects of:

  • Human performance & limitations
  • Airlaw

The format of the exams is:

  • All questions are Multiple choice or dropdown answers
  • You must pass each exam within 4 attempts, otherwise all exams need reattempted.
  • You have a maximum of 18 months from the date of your first exam attempt to pass the 2 conversion exams. Once you pass both exams, you have 24 months to successfully pass the UK PPL practical skills test.
  • Each exam has a pass mark of 75%

An ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) licence, is issued by most of the world, when the country is an ICAO member.  This includes most of the countries of the world with the exception of:

  • The Holy See
  • Liechtenstein

The UK is an ICAO member state and recognises the validity of other ICAO member states license for conversion. ICAO licences also include licences issued by the FAA, CASA, and EASA.
