UK ATPL theory papers require 75% to pass, with a maximum of four attempts per subject, six sittings and an 18-month completion period. Understand how those limits work before booking.

UK ATPL exam rules can look a little daunting at first. Once you understand how attempts, sittings and deadlines fit together, planning becomes much easier. Ideally, the first time you meet these rules should be before you book an exam.
The four numbers to remember
- 75%: the pass mark for each paper.
- Four attempts: the maximum allowed per subject.
- Six sittings: the limit for completing the exam set.
- 18 months: the completion period, counted from the end of the month of your first attempt.
These limits are set out in CAA regulation FCL.025.
What counts as an ATPL exam sitting?
A sitting is a 10-day examination period, not one individual paper. Several subjects can fit within it. For example, three different papers taken within the same recognised sitting use one sitting, rather than three.
Check the CAA timetable and sitting guidance when grouping bookings, especially around weekends. A calendar plan is rather cheaper than a surprise.

When does the 18-month clock start?
Your first attempt triggers the clock, even if you don’t pass. If you first attempt a paper in October 2026, the completion deadline is 30 April 2028. Enrolling on the course does not itself start this exam period.
What happens if you exceed a limit?
If you cannot pass a subject within four attempts, or complete the set within six sittings and the time limit, you must retake the full set after further training determined by your ATO.
Ask for help after a disappointing result. Working out what went wrong is more useful than immediately booking another attempt.
How long are the completed passes valid?
The completed theory is valid for CPL or IR issue for 36 months from your final pass. For ATPL issue, the separate seven-year rule is tied to the last validity date of an IR entered in your licence; it does not simply run from your last theory exam. Check your route with your ATO.
At SkyLearner, our ATPL ground school course includes study planning, knowledge checks and instructor support to help you prepare sensibly. If you’re studying around a full-time job, plan the exam dates around realistic preparation time.
