Modular ATPL Ground School: What Do You Need to Start?

The short answer

To start SkyLearner’s modular ATPL(A) ground school, you need an ICAO-compliant PPL(A), suitable English and basic maths and physics. A Class 1 medical is recommended early, but is not an entry requirement for theory.

Thinking about starting modular ATPL ground school? The entry requirements are more straightforward than you might expect. Here’s what you need for our UK CAA ATPL(A) theory course, and what we recommend sorting out early.

Do you need a PPL to start ATPL theory?

Yes: you need at least an ICAO-compliant Private Pilot Licence for aeroplanes, PPL(A). That means a licence issued by an ICAO contracting state to ICAO standards; ICAO itself doesn’t issue pilot licences. A LAPL or UK NPPL alone does not meet this requirement.

You don’t need to be in current flying practice. At SkyLearner, a lapsed rating or expired medical won’t stop you starting ground school. Getting back into the books can come before getting back into the cockpit.

Do you need a Class 1 medical for ground school?

A Class 1 medical isn’t mandatory to start our ATPL theory course, but we strongly recommend getting one early if you’re planning a commercial flying career. It helps establish that you meet the medical requirements before committing more time and money. The CAA explains which medical certificate each licence requires.

A Class 1 also includes Class 2 privileges, with their own validity dates. If the Class 1 period expires, you may still have Class 2 validity for private flying: check the dates and limitations on your certificate. Failing a Class 1 assessment does not automatically mean you qualify for Class 2.

What about English, maths and physics?

You need enough English to follow lessons, understand questions and discuss anything you’re unsure about. SkyLearner’s entry standard is at least ICAO English Level 4.

You also need a working understanding of basic maths and physics to follow the course. If school feels a while ago, don’t panic: our introductory day includes a refresher. Nobody expects you to arrive with every formula permanently lodged in your head.
